How can we help?

Answers to what people ask most, and a person to write to when they don't cover it.

Talk to us

  1. Say what happenedWhat you were doing, and the message Hewy showed, word for word. A screenshot helps. If setup went wrong, Copy Details on its results gives us the whole story, without your passwords or keys.
  2. Email usWrite to support@hewy.ai. Never send passwords, SSH keys or API keys: we'll never ask for them.
  3. Or tell us in TestFlightDuring the beta, take a screenshot in the app and tap Share Beta Feedback. It comes straight to us.

Servers and setup

Which servers can run agents?

Linux servers on 64-bit Intel, AMD or ARM (any common distribution, including a Raspberry Pi 4 or 5 with a 64-bit OS), Macs with Remote Login turned on, and Windows 10 and 11 PCs with OpenSSH Server. Anything else with SSH, such as routers, NAS boxes or older servers, gets a terminal, files and key management.

Do I need to install anything on my server?

No. Set Up Agents checks what's missing and installs it in one go: the Hewy Daemon, Node.js and the agents you choose. It shows the exact commands first, and asks for your sudo password once, only if a step needs it. To do it yourself instead, follow Set up a server by hand.

Setup says agents run without a sandbox

Some servers don't allow the sandbox: containers whose host blocks it, and some locked-down kernels. Hewy tells you why, and what an administrator could change. On Ubuntu 24.04 it can add Ubuntu's own fix for you, with your permission.

How do I connect to a Mac?

Turn on Remote Login in System Settings → General → Sharing. Hewy walks you through it, and continues by itself as soon as the switch is on.

Agents and API keys

Which agents work with Hewy?

Claude (through Anthropic's Agent SDK), Codex and OpenCode.

Which API keys do I need?

Your own: an Anthropic key for Claude, an OpenAI key for Codex, and any supported provider for OpenCode. Add them once under API Keys, pick defaults, and choose a different key for any server or chat.

Can I use my ChatGPT or Claude plan?

ChatGPT: yes, with Codex and OpenCode, on a Plus or Pro plan. Choose "Use your ChatGPT plan" for the agent on a server. Hewy shows a link and a short code; open the link on any device, sign in to ChatGPT and enter the code. The agent keeps the login on your server, and Hewy never sees it. If OpenAI says device codes aren't allowed, turn on device code sign-in in ChatGPT's security settings and try again.

Claude: yes, with a Claude Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise plan. On a server's page, under Agents, choose "Use your Claude plan". Hewy opens Claude Code's own sign-in on that server: tap Open Sign-In Page, sign in to Claude, and paste the code it gives you back into the sign-in. Claude Code keeps the login on your server, and Hewy never sees it. Your plan's usage limits apply, and long goals and repeating chats use them up faster. The server needs Hewy Daemon 0.5.11 or later, which the app offers to install.

Does my code go through Hewy's servers?

No. Agents run on your server and talk to the provider you chose. Your devices talk to your server over SSH.

Terminals, files and snippets

Do terminals keep running when I close the app?

On servers set up with Hewy, yes. The Hewy Daemon keeps the shell running, and you can pick the same terminal up on any of your devices. Elsewhere, such as on a router, the terminal ends when the app disconnects.

Why did my terminal end?

A terminal ends when its shell exits, when you close it, or when the Hewy Daemon restarts, which includes updating it. Hewy warns you before an update.

Can I copy files between two servers?

Yes. In the Files window, pick a server for each side and copy between them. The data passes through your device, so the servers don't need access to each other.

What are snippets?

Commands you save once and type into any terminal with a tap. They sync between your devices, encrypted like the rest of your data. Use {{name}} in a snippet to be asked for a value each time.

When something's wrong

What Hewy's messages mean, word for word, and what to do about them.

The connection to web-01 closed.

The server or the network ended the SSH connection. Hewy tries again by itself, and at once when your network changes. To try now, choose View → Reconnect All on a Mac (⇧⌘R), or pull down the list on iPhone. Terminals on servers set up with Hewy keep running meanwhile.

Not reachable from this network: 10.0.0.5 is a private address. If it's behind a VPN or tunnel, turn that on.

That address belongs to a home or office network. Join that network, or turn on the VPN or tunnel that reaches it. On a Mac that's on the same network, also allow Hewy in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network.

Something else answers at 192.168.1.10 on this network, so Hewy didn't log in.

Another network uses the same address, and a different machine answered. Hewy never logs in to a machine it doesn't recognize, and tries again when you change networks.

web-01.example.com didn't answer on port 22

Nothing replied in time: the server may be off, or a firewall may be dropping connections. Check the address and port on the server's page.

web-01.example.com isn't accepting SSH connections on port 22

The server is up, but nothing is listening for SSH on that port, or something turned the connection away. Check the port, and that SSH is running on the server.

Subscription and billing

How does the free trial work?

New subscribers get 14 days free, with everything in it. Cancel before the trial ends and you aren't charged. Apple offers the trial once per Apple Account.

Do I need a Hewy account to subscribe?

No. You subscribe with your Apple Account, and it covers your Macs and iPhones signed in to it. A Hewy account only syncs your servers between devices.

How do I cancel?

In Hewy, open Settings → Account → Manage Subscription. Or on iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions; on a Mac, open the App Store, click your name, then Account Settings. Cancel at least a day before it renews.

Can I get a refund?

Apple handles payment, so refunds come from Apple: ask at reportaproblem.apple.com.

Hewy doesn't see my subscription on a new device

Make sure the App Store is signed in with the Apple Account you subscribed with, then choose Restore Purchases, on the subscription screen or in Settings → Account.

What happens if my subscription ends?

Hewy locks until you subscribe again. Agents and terminals already running on your servers keep going, and your servers, keys and synced data stay where they are.

Your account

I forgot my master password

If you have a recovery code, choose "Forgot Password? Use Recovery Code" when signing in. If any of your devices is still signed in, change your password there. Without either, your data can't be recovered by anyone, including us. That's the price of encryption only you can unlock.

I lost a device

On another device, open Settings → Devices and remove the lost one, with your master password. It's signed out for good, your other devices ignore anything it tries to write, and Hewy changes your account's encryption key, so it can't read anything synced after that.

How do I delete my account?

In Hewy, open Settings → Account → Delete Account and confirm with your master password. Everything we store about you goes at once, and from our backups within 14 days. Your servers aren't touched: the Hewy Daemon and your chats stay on them until you remove them.
